4.   Healthy Organizations, Healthy Communities: What Does Equity Have to do with It?
Monday, March 8, 1-5 p.m., Ingham County Health Department, 2nd Floor, Room A

A Capacity Building Workshop presented by Doak Bloss and Debbie Edokpolo from the Ingham County Health Department’s Social Justice Team

Research has confirmed that when an organization is authentically welcoming and inclusive of people from diverse cultures and backgrounds, it is also likely to be more productive and efficient in accomplishing its goals.  But what does it mean to be authentic in our effort to become welcoming and inclusive?  How do we create and maintain organizations that promote a level playing field for resources and opportunities in our community?

An important first step is to recognize the full range of our cultural identities, and how those identities affect our ability to get an education, earn a living wage, secure safe housing, and establish positive social networks—all factors that are critical to determining our health as individuals, as members of organizations, and as a community.  Participants in this workshop will learn new language structures for addressing issues of difference, inclusion, and unearned privilege.  They will also engage in facilitated dialogue on ways we can commit our individual and collective resources to the elimination of racism, classism, sexism, and other forms of oppression that adversely affect the health of everyone in our community.

Advance Registration is Requested.  Please email a separate registration for each participant, using the form below, to powerofweconsortium@ingham.org.

New! Friday Night Movie Night: Food, Inc.

Friday, March 19, 7-9 p.m., Southside Community Center (5825 Wise Road)

O
nce a month, South Lansing CDA is hosting movies about the social, economic, political and health implications of food.  Join us for movies, snacks and discussion!  Our March movie is Food, Inc.:

In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment.

We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli—the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.

Featuring interviews with such experts as Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation), Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma, In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto) along with forward thinking social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield's Gary Hirshberg and Polyface Farms' Joel Salatin, Food, Inc. reveals surprising—and often shocking truths—about what we eat, how it's produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here."

13. New! The Wolves of Isle Royale

Sunday, March 28, 2:00 p.m., Potter Park Zoo (1301 S. Pennsylvania Ave.)

World-renowned wolf expert Dr. Rolf Peterson will lead the audience through the wild life of the wolves of Isle Royale National Park and the important predator-prey research taking place there. Peterson, project leader of the Isle Royale wolves and moose study and author of The Wolves of Isle Royale: A Broken Balance will also speak about the issues and concerns surrounding the management of the wolf population.

Tickets are $15. For more information please visit www.potterparkzoo.org or call (517) 342-2718. All proceeds from the event will go toward the Zoo Society’s education programs.

What to Expect

Buying locally grown food means learning to eat seasonally. For example, spring is mostly lettuce, spinach, greens, peas, fava beans, beets, green onions, etc. Summer is all the traditional farm veggies: tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, carrots, celery, beans, summer squash, cucumbers, melons, broccoli, cauliflower, etc (too many to list), and then fall is storage crops like onions, leeks, cabbage, carrots, beets, winter squash, and more lettuce, spinach, and greens. Recipes will be available with your produce each week. It's a great way to learn to cook with veggies!

Logistics
As the consumer, you pay Giving Tree $300 up front, or in installments, and you get around $12 (often more than that) of produce each week from mid-May through the end of October. Pick up is available at the farm (day TBA later) or at the Allen St Farmer's Market on Wednesdays from 2-6:30pm. The goal is to have 75 members signed up by April 1st. To sign up, please visit the CSA website at
http://cbisgivingtreefarm.wordpress.com/ or if you don't have internet access just call the farm at 517-482-8885 and ask for Melissa Hornaday.
