Gardening in South Lansing

Upcoming Garden Workdays: 

A Garden of Grace Meeting- Wednesday, August 4 @ 6:30 p.m., In the garden or in the Fellowship Hall of the Grace United Methodist Church (1900 Boston Blvd) in the case of inclement weather. 
 
Jolly Grove Community Garden Summer Garden Potluck: Friday, August 20 @ 6:30 p.m. Bring a dish to share!

 Jolly Grove Community Garden
Located at the southwest corner of Jolly Road and Pleasant Grove Road intersection, the Jolly Grove Community Garden has 30 community garden plots (10'x10'), a children's garden and a donation garden. This garden is a partnership between South Lansing CDA, The Ingham County Land Bank and The Garden Project.  Email Rita at rita@southlansing.org or call 517-374-5700 for more information and/or to volunteer in the donation garden and on garden workdays. 

Comcast Cares Day at The Jolly Grove Community Garden: Comcast Cares Day is a national community service day for Comcast employees and families to reach out to the community. The Jolly Grove C.G. was selected as the recipient of this great annual service project! Thanks to all who attended on April 24, 2010 and helped grow our garden! Check out photos from Comcast Cares Day 2010! 

 

A Garden of Grace 
Located at Grace United Methodist Church (1900 Boston Blvd), Grace United and South Lansing CDA are excited to start a garden together this spring! This garden is a community gathering space hosting twelve community garden plots (10'x10'), a donation garden and a memorial garden. For more information on volunteering (on workdays or in the donation garden), please contact Rita at 517-374 5700 or rita@southlansing.org. 
 
Wexford Montessori Magnet School Garden
Located at 5217 Wexford Road, the garden has four raised beds for students. The Afterschool and Summer Nutrition and Gardening Club provides students with hands-on garden and nutrition education. Students learn about the food pyramid, healthy lifestyles, all while experiencing the growth of food in their garden. For more information or to schedule a program like this at your school, or to volunteer, contact Rita (Garden Coordinator) or Catie (Nutrition Coordinator) at 517-374-5700.
 
Southside Sprouts Summer Camp
Located at the Southside Community Center (5825 Wise Road), summer campers have the opportunity to learn hands-on garden and nutrition education. The kids will tend a veggie garden and try out new recipes each week. The camp will run from June 21- Aug 12, Mondays and Thursdays, 9:30am-11am. To register, contact the Southside Community Center at 517-483-6685.
 
Southbrook Villa
Located at 457 E. Edgewood Blvd. the senior residents of Southbrook Villa participate in seed starting and transplanting workshops and will each receive a container garden to keep on their patio. For more information, or to schedule a program like this at your location, contact Rita (Garden Coordinator) or Catie (Nutrition Coordinator) at 374-5700. 
 
 
SLCDA Garden Wishlist: 
seeds (veggie and flower),  garden tools (wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes, hand troughs, gloves, hoes, etc.), seed start trays, spray bottles, and volunteers. Contact Rita at rita@southlansing.org or 517-374-5700 to donate. 
 
 
Garden Resources:
  
Let’s Garden Lansing! Calendar, featuring local gardening education workshops and events. Look for upcoming workshops at Southside Community Center (at Hill Academy) and other areas of Lansing.
 
The Youth Gardening Coalition is a group of youth garden leaders who provide support and resources to youth gardens in the Greater Lansing area. YGC reaches out to youth who want to be part of the youth gardening effort. 
 
The Garden Project provides the Greater Lansing area with access to land, seeds, plants, tools, educational resources and more.   
 
Ingham County MSU Extension offers a variety of garden workshops and classes.  Click here for a Calender of Events.
