The 2011 Hawk Island Triathlon was Certified by the Council for Responsible Sport, the only event in Michigan with this honor.
The focus of the Hawk-I-Tri is to provide a true community event, promote personal wellness though sport and nutrition, in addition to directing attention towards environmental and social sustainability.
The Hawk-I-Tri aims to give more to participants and the community while taking less from the environment. The “green” efforts in all facets of the event, from organizing to participating, inspire all to live lives that are environmentally and socially sustainable. The categories for green certification include waste, equipment and materials, community and outreach, health promotion, and innovation.
In 2011, the Hawk-I-Tri hosted more than 2000 participants, spectators, and volunteers. The event produced only 24 pounds of landfill waste, that’s .012 pounds per person! Our sustainability efforts also diverted 229 pounds of recyclables and 135 pounds of compostable materials from going into a landfill.
For the 2012 Hawk-I-Tri, we wish to continue and improve upon sustainability efforts to ensure that we can all enjoy the event and the community long into the future.
